-- PHOTO PACKAGE -- AFGHANISTAN-US-ATTACKS-911-HERAT
A combo of pictures created on September 9, 2011 shows (top) a Northern Alliance soldier (mujahedeen) standing guard as Afghan Muslims pray during Friday prayers at the Jamae Mosque in Herat on November 16, 2001 which fell to the opposition Northern Alliance 12 November following a popular uprising against the ruling Taliban militia and Muslims praying at the same mosque on August 21, 2009. September 11, 2011 marks the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York which prompted the US-led invasion of Afghanistan less than a month later. The US-led campaign working with the Northern Alliance was designed to topple the Taliban and ensure Al-Qaeda could no longer use Afghanistan as a safe haven. 10 years on Herat, close to the Afghan border with Iran, is seen as one of the safest parts of Afghanistan and was among the first wave of seven places that passed from foreign to Afghan security control in July, 2011.
