INDONESIA-AFGHANS
Ali Riza, one of four Afghans whose mouths were sewn in protest lay down before fainted after three days without food and drink in Mataram 10 January 2004. Nine Afghan asylum-seekers on hunger strike to demand refugee status were taken to hospital in Indonesia-s Lombok island after collapsing. Seven Afghan asylum-seekers began the hunger strike on Wednesday night in protest against the decision by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to reject their refugee claims, two others joined the strike on Saturday. The asylum-seekers have been stranded on Lombok for two years after a failed attempt to reach Australia. They are among 160 Afghan asylum-seekers still in Indonesia. The UNHCR said Friday that it would not review their appeals unless they stopped the hunger strike to discourage such behavior. Indonesia has in recent years become a transit point for people from the Middle East and Afghanistan seeking asylum in Australia. AFP PHOTO/STR
