ROMANIA-CANADA-MINING-GOLD-ENVIRONMENT-HERITAGE

Valentin Rus, the director of Gold Mining Museum shows a Roman-era gold mining gallery in Rosia Montana village (430km west from Bucharest) on September 20, 2011. Picturesque town of Transylvania, Rosia Montana is based on one of the largest gold deposits in Europe. Attracted by this gold mine, a Canadian group is planning an open pit mine that divides people and creates controversy throughout Romania. Recently, the strong support of Romanian President Traian Basescu in the project that will use large amounts of cyanide in an area famous for its Roman ruins, has revived a controversy born in 1999, when the company Rosia Montana Gold Corporation (RMGC), owned 80% by the Canadian company Gabriel Resources, acquired the operating license.
