ROMANIA-FRANCE-ROMA-MIGRATION
Romanian Roma children arriving from France are pictured inside a bus at the International Airport of Timisoara, 600 km west from Bucharest, on October 11, 2011. Over 150 Roma sent back to Romania by French authorities landed at the airport in the western city of Timisoara, according to an AFP correspondent and airport authorities. The 159 people arriving from the northern region of Lille accepted a "voluntary return aid" from French authorities. The European Union had strongly criticised French president Nicolas Sarkozy and his government's politics after the deportation of Romanian and Bulgarian Roma from France last summer. After weeks of tensions Bucharest and Paris decided in September to "put an end to sterile polemics" and to better cooperate to improve living conditions for this minority. Romania is home to 530,000 Roma, according to the official census. However, local NGOs say that about 2.5 million Roma live in this country, many of them hiding their origins for fear of discrimination. AFP PHOTO ADRIAN PICLISAN
