US pharmaceuticals giant Merck said October 28, 2011 it had tripled its net income to $1.7 billion, beating expectations thanks to big increases in sales of popular drugs and a favorable exchange rate. Last year's net income during the same period stood at $342 million. Earnings per share for the latest quarter reached $0.94, ahead of the $0.91 predicted by analysts.
