CORREX-BRAZIL-ORE-CARRIER-SHIP-DAMAGE
The ore carrier Vale Beijing is towed away on December 6, 2011 from the Ponta da Madeira terminal, in Sao Luiz, northern Brazil. The 361-metre-long, 400,000 DWT ship was docked at the Ponta da Madeira terminal loading ore when the operation had to be aborted after a leak on her ballast tanks was detected. The VLOC (Very Large Ore Carrier) ship suffered multiple cracks on her ballast tanks that allowed water to flood into the No.7 hold. The vessel entered service on September 27, 2011 as the largest ore carrier afloat and is classified as Valemax, nearly twice the size of a typical capEsize vessel that carries iron ore from Brazil to China.
