Croatia President Ivo Josipovic delivers a speech during a ceremony for the signature of the accession treaty with Croatia, on the sidelines of an European Union summit at the EU headquarters on December 9, 2011 in Brussels. Croatia signed an EU accession treaty, a move paving the way for the former Yugoslav republic to join the bloc in mid-2013, after almost a decade of long and often fraught negotiations. Croatia will then take up observer status at the EU summit. Before Zagreb can formally join the bloc on July 1, 2013, citizens will get to vote on the question in a referendum early next year.
