AFGHANISTAN-US-UNREST-MILITARY
An Afgan presidential palace official unfurls a US flag near a podium before Afghan President Hamid Karzai and US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta held a joint press conference in Kabul on December 14, 2011. Panetta's two-day visit to Afghanistan comes as Washington starts to withdraw combat troops and hand over security to Afghan forces, who are due to take full control by the end of 2014. It also comes after America's fragile alliance with Pakistan plunged into further crisis when NATO air strikes killed 24 Pakistani soldiers near the Afghan border on November 26. The painting on the wall shows Mohammad Zahir Shah, a monarch who introduced a constitutional monarchy to Afghanistan and was given the title “father of the nation” in the current Constitution.
