TO GO WITH AFP STORY by Robert MacPherson "Death-dodging wildlife finds path to safety under US roads"
This image courtesy the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science released December 22, 2011 shows a racoon using a highway culvert in Maryland to cross from one side of the street to the other. A study conducted by the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science reveals that animals are using the safer storm drains as shortcuts through traffic. Culverts are intended to channel water under a highway. But it turns out that animals of all kinds have figured out how to exploit such man-made structures to avoid becoming roadkill.
