BELGIUM-VATICAN-RIES
Monsignor Julien Ries of Belgium, a former professor at the Catholic University of Leuven, poses on January 6, 2012 in Ath after being appointed cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI. The pope said on January 6 he would create 22 cardinals in February, in a key announcement for the Catholic Church as 18 of them will have the power to elect his successor. The new cardinals will be formally appointed at a conference known as a consistory to be held in Vatican City on February 18.
Ries and three other cardinals aged over 80 will not be able to vote to elect a new pope. AFP PHOTO / NICOLAS MAETERLINCK - BELGIUM OUT -
