GERMANY-ART-HISTORY-GDR
A bust of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin (top, L) lies in the storage facility of the Beeskow Art Archive, in the small town of Beeskow, on January 30, 2012. The archive comprises some 23.000 exhibits, mostly paintings, drawings and graphics, which belonged to the government of the former east Germany (GDR). Until 1989 many of these "official" works had been displayed in public buildings all over the GDR, reverting to their respective federal states after the fall of the Berlin wall, the collections of the states of Mecklenburg Vorpommern, Brandenburg and Berlin ended up in a reconstructed granary in the town of Beeskow, with little funds or political will to store, preserve, or exhibit them.
