GBISSAU-VOTE-OPEN
Guinea Bissau presidential candidate Carlos Gomes Junior (C) surrounded by members of the press leaves after casting his vote on March 18, 2012 at a polling station in Bissau. The small coup-prone nation of Guinea-Bissau began voting today for a new president -- an office no one has yet held for a full five-year term. An election in the former Portuguese colony that follows the death of leader Malam Bacai Sanha in January after a long illness and will sees nine candidates vying to take his place. Guinea-Bissau is the only west African nation to have achieved independence through military force and since 1974, the army and state have been in constant, often deadly competition.
