PERU-ARCHAEOLOGY-MOCHICA-ALTAR
Photo released on April 3, 2012 of a Mochica-Inca culture altar used for human sacrifices, dating 1,600 years old, seen at the top of “Campana” mountain, 1,000 meters above sea level, 16 kilometers east from the city of Trujullo, in La Libertad region, more than 550 kilometers north of Lima. The structure is about five feet high, and consists of three steps of 50 cm. in height and has a rock on top, similar to the Intihuatana (sundial) of the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in Cuzco. The Mochica is a culture of ancient Peru that reached its peak between the ages I and VI D. C., occupying a territory that spanned much of what is now Peru's north coast. AFP PHOTO/Regulo FRANCO
