US President Barack Obama (L) talks next to his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy during a ceremony at a World War I memorial in Cannes in this November 4, 2011 file photo at the end of the G20 Summit for Heads of State and Government. The relations between Barack Obama and Nicolas Sarkozy, overcome on May 6, 2012 in the French presidential election by Francois Hollande, have passed during more than three years by phases of seduction, irritation, co-operation and shared interests. President Obama also telephoned Hollande to congratulate him and invite him to the White House this month, after Sarkozy became the latest European leader to be toppled by the eurozone crisis. Obama "indicated that he looks forward to working closely with Mr Hollande and his government on a range of shared economic and security challenges," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement on May 7, 2012.
