TO GO WITH AFP STORY CANADA-MINING-ENVIRONMENT
The Fermont site, at the ArcelorMittal mining complex seen on March 21, 2012 in Fermont, Quebec consists mostly of a gigantic crater, a lunar scenery criss-crossed daily by the most powerful and biggest trucks in the world which excavate the iron ore. Huge mining giants from Europe, China and India are pumping billions of dollars into virgin territories in far northern Quebec in a race to satisfy a growing global appetite for iron ore. Here in Fermont, the flourishing iron ore excavation industry is driving the local economy in a town which is home to the giant mining concern Arcelor Mittal Mining Canada, one of North America's leading producers of iron ore.
