PAKISTAN-US-AFGHANISTAN-UNREST-NATO-DEMO
Supporters of Pakistani political and Islamic party Jammat-e-Islami (JI) gather for a protest in Karachi on June 10, 2012, against the Pakistani government's plan to reopen NATO supplies route to Afghanistan. Pakistan on June 10 branded US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta's remarks on insurgent safe havens in the country as "misplaced and unhelpful". The statement came as US assistant defence secretary Peter Lavoy visited Islamabad in a fresh attempt to bring an end a six-month blockade on NATO supplies crossing into Afghanistan. Islamabad's closure of the Afghan border to NATO following the November 2011 air strikes that killed 24 soldiers plunged relations with US to an all-time low after Pakistan was humiliated by a US raid that killed Osama bin Laden last May.
