US-ECONOMY-STOCKTON-FILES
(FILES) In this dated June 27, 2012 filed photo shows a pedestrian walking by the vacant Bank of Stockton in Stockton, California. In the 19th century, the city of Stockton, California, was a thriving Wild West gold rush town -- a destination for optimistic miners looking to strike it rich. Today, the bankrupt city is a cautionary tale of financial excess and a sobering reminder that the US economy is still struggling with the fallout of the 2008 housing market crash. Last week, Stockton became the largest US city to ever declare bankruptcy. The inland agriculture hub has been crushed by the foreclosure crisis, increasingly costly retiree benefits and debt for civic projects taken on in better times.
