US-AVIATION-DEFENSE-EUROCOPTER
The Eurocopter X3 is seen during a demonstration day for US media and industry officials ON July 23, 2012, at the Manassas Regional Airport in Virginia, near Washington. The multi-prop helicopter is in the US as part of a month-long tour in which Eurocopter will demonstrate the aircraft's operational capabilities for civil and military use to potential buyers. Touted as the fastest helicopter ever made, the X3 utilizes a Eurocopter Dauphin helicopter airframe and is equipped with two turboshaft engines that power a five-blade main rotor system, along with two propellers installed on short-span fixed wings. This hybrid configuration creates an advanced transportation system that offers the speed of a turboprop-powered aircraft and the full hover flight capabilities of a helicopter. It is tailored to applications where operational costs, flight duration and mission success depend directly on the maximum cruising speed. A variety of "scaled-up" larger designs have been made that include a rear cargo door. AFP PHOTO/Paul J. Richards
