PAKISTAN-LABOUR-BRICK MAKING

In this picture taken on July 7, 2012, Nusrat, 15, squats as she moulds a mix of sand and water into bricks at a brick kiln in the outskirts of Lahore. Nusrat who lives with her mother at the kiln is currently hoping to break her familiy's cycle of dependence on the kiln to make a living. She is studying to present an exam in 2013 that will allow her to go to a regular school. She has dreams of becoming a teacher one day. According to the United Nations International Labor Organization (ILO) child and adult labourers working in brick kilns in South Asia spend over 70 hours a week performing repetitive motions and are exposed to sun, heat and blowing dust. An ILO report states that "children also help perform tasks that, while not always visible, make adults more productive. Children help carry water, sweep the workspace and roll the mud into balls for older relatives to mould. At home, they help with domestic activities such as cleaning, cooking, looking after younger siblings, and fetching water to free up time for other household members to devote their time to making bricks. According to BUNYAD, a Pakistani NGO, about 95% of families working in brick kilns in or near Lahore have taken advance payments from the owner. Due to the advance payments, owners used to exploit them in the form of low wage rate, bonded labour for all family members, excessive working hours and no opportunity to work somewhere else.
