HUNGARY-POLITICS-LAW-ELECTION

Hungary's former Socialist prime minister, Chairman of Democratic Coalition Party Ferenc Gyurcsany looks on in front of the Hungarian parliament building in Budapest on September 10, 2012. Ferenc Gyurcsany said on September 9 he had begun a hunger strike to protest a government proposal to amend the electoral law. "The situation is dramatic and requires dramatic political gestures so that the silent mass of voters can come out of its apathy," Gyurcsany told journalists in front of Budapest's parliament, where he had set up tents with three colleagues from his DK party, who will also join the strike. The government, led by right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orban, wants to amend the electoral law to require voters to register before an election in order to vote. AFP PHOTO / ATTILA KISBENEDEK
