SENEGAL-SEA-ACCIDENT-DISASTER-ANNIVERSARY
Children pray at the grave of one of the victims of the Joola ferry disaster on the tenth annivesary at the Bao cemetery in the suburbs of Dakar on September 26, 2012. The sinking in 2002 of the Senegalese ferry the Joola was one of the worst maritime disasters ever recorded in peacetime, leaving well over 1,800 people dead or missing. The Joola, which went down off the Gambian coast after sailing from Ziguinchor in Senegal's southern Casamance region, was later found to have been carrying well over 2,000 people, even though it was only licensed to carry 580, including crew members.
