In his first public comment on Brazil's major bribery trial, ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has accused the opposition of trying to exploit the scandal for political ends. Lula da Silva said the opposition Brazilian Social Democratic Party (PSDB) was "hitting below the belt" by trying to link his protege and PT candidate for mayor Fernando Haddad to the vote-buying scheme. Thirty-eight former ministers, lawmakers, businessmen and bankers are facing prosecution before the Supreme Court over the alleged scheme that ran from 2002 to 2005 during Lula's first term.
