NEW YORK, NY - OCTOBER 11: Chairs are seen in a section of St. Paul's Chapel in lower Manhattan on October 11, 2012 in New York City. George Washington worshiped here and 9/11 workers received 24-hour care in the chapel, which is the oldest public building in Manhattan in continuous use. The chapel today is billed as "a center for worship and the arts, a community of reconciliation, and a place of pilgrimage for all people." A new study by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life found that just under 20% of Americans are not affiliated with a religion today, up from 15 percent just five years ago. Additionally, the survey found conclusively for the first time that less than 50 percent of American adults today say they are Protestant, down from close to two-thirds in the 1970s.
