AFGHANISTAN-SOCIETY-ORPHANAGE
Sahel, 4 an Afghan orphan living at the Balkh Orphanage in the outskirts of Mazar i Sharif attends a class on October 7, 2012. Some 58 children, mostly boys, live here where they are fed, schooled and educated by caretakers under the direction and support of the Afghan government. According to the United Nations, violence in Afghanistan continues to inflict severe suffering for children and is undermining efforts to provide a protective and secure environment for them to thrive. A recent UN report added " Afghanistan remains one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a child". Orphans in Afghanistan are referred to as "Yateem" which means parent less. In many cases, orphans are survived by their mothers, however, in some parts of Afghanistan women are seen as incapable of independently providing for their children. PHOTO/ Qais USYAN
