FRANCE-ALGERIA-HISTORY-WAR-DEMO-FILES
(FILES) A file picture taken on October 17, 1961 in Paris shows pro-Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN) Algerians staging a demonstration. French President Francois Hollande said on October 17, 2012 that France recognised the "bloody repression" of Algerian protesters in Paris that historians say left dozens, possibly hundreds, dead on October 17, 1961. On that day in 1961, at the call of Algeria's National Liberation Front (FLN), which was fighting for independence from France, between 20,000 and 30,000 men, women and children from Algeria protested in Paris against a police curfew. French police, under orders from the head of the Parisian police, Maurice Papon, attacked the illegal but peaceful demonstration. More than ten thousand Algerians were subsequently arrested and detained in various pre-planned locations (the Palais des Sports, the Parc des Expositions, the Stade Coubertin, the Centre d'Identification at Vincennes) for nearly four days.
