CROATIA-WARCRIMES-ICTY-GENERALS-APPEAL-FREE-PRESIDENT
Croatian former generals Ante Gotovina (R) and Mladen Markac (L), who were acquitted over charges of war crimes, arrive during a welcoming ceremony dedicated to their return to the country, in Zagreb on November 16, 2012. Tens of thousands of Croatians jubilantly welcomed their "hero" generals, Gotovina and Markac, acquitted by the UN war crimes court of crimes against the Serbs during the 1990s breakup of Yugoslavia, while former foe Serbia was appalled by the "scandalous" decision. On Zagreb's central Ban Jelacic square war veterans and soldiers who fought under acquitted generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac during the 1991-1995 Croatia's war, carried flags of their units and pictures of the two men, seen as national "heroes."
