The annual awards ceremony recognizes journalists who risk their lives and liberty defending press freedom. This year four journalists from Brazil, Tibet, Kyrgyzstan, and Liberia were honored. Wangchen and Kyrgyzstani journalist Azimjon Askarov, who also remains imprisoned, were unable to attend.
