MALI-FRANCE-CONFLICT
A French Mirage 2000 fighter jet pilot (L) of the Nancy-based 3/3 Fighter Squadron Ardennes talks early on February 18, 2013 before taking off for a Close Air Support (CAS) mission from Bamako's airport. European Union foreign ministers on February 18 formally approved the launch of a 500-strong EU military mission to train the Malian army, which has already begun work on the ground. France launched its intervention on January 11, after Mali's interim government called for help fending off the Islamist insurgents as they began to make incursions into government territory.
