IRAN-HEALTH-CANCER

THIS PICTURE IS PART OF A PACKAGE OF 21 BLACK AND WHITE IMAGES BY AFP IRANIAN PHOTOGRAPHER BEHROUZ MEHRI DOCUMENTING THE FINAL MONTHS OF HIS SISTER'S BREAST CANCER BATTLE.

Iranian Hamed (L) and Masood (R) carry their sister Soheila Mehri (C) on a chair from her flat on fourth flour to take her to the hospital for radiotherapy on February 23, 2013, after the cancer spread to her brain. Soheila, a retired primary school teacher, who fought her cancer for several months, passed away at the age of 54 on April 13, 2013. According to Iranian cancer research, breast cancer is the most common form of the illness suffered by Iranian women which is affecting them at least one decade younger than their counterparts in developed countries. The annual number of new breast cancer cases is estimated to double from 2008 to 2030 due to the demographic transition alone, while import of medicine is becoming increasingly difficult as patients in Iran are affected by Western economic sanctions due to the country's controversial nuclear program.
