TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY SEBASTIAN SMITH
Freshmen biology students from Mount Saint Mary's College count glass eels that were caught in the Quassaick Creek May 1, 2013 in Newburgh, New York as part of a project by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and and Cornell’s Water Resource Institute to monitor eel populations. Eels are under pressure in the Atlantic region, very restricted fishing is allowed in the US and the European Union. There is special demand in Japan where it is believed to have medicinal benefits. The captured eels were later released upstream in the creek. AFP PHOTO/Stan HONDA
