GERMANY-POLITICS-SPD-ANNIVERSARY
(1st row, L-R) Former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, EU parliament president Martin Schulz, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, German Social Democratic Party (SPD) leader Sigmar Gabriel, French President Francois Hollande, German President Joachim Gauck and North Rhine-Westphalia's State Premier Hannelore Kraft have taken seat at the Gewandhaus concert hall in Leipzig, eastern Germany, to attend festivities to mark the German social democratic SPD party's 150th anniversary on May 23, 2013. The SPD, Europe's oldest political party, has invited nearly 50 current and former heads of state and government as it celebrates 150th birthday and its turbulent history, which saw it advance workers rights and suffer persecution by the Nazis. The SPD was founded on May 23, 1863 in Leipzig as the 'Allgemeiner Deutscher Arbeiterverein' (common German worker's club). AFP PHOTO / POOL / ODD ANDERSEN
