SOMALIA-UNREST-ETHIOPIA-KENYA-POLITICS-FILES

(FILES) This handout photograph released by the African Union-United Nations Information Support Team on October 1, 2012, in Saa'moja near Kismayo shows Sheik Ahmed Madobe (R), Ras Kamboni militia brigade commander, which is allied to the Somali National Army (SNA) looking on during the arrival of his troops in the area. After decades of war, Somalia is taking small steps toward recovery, but breakaway regions, rival clans and the competing interests of neighbouring nations are threatening its fragile progress, analysts warn. Former Islamist warlord Ahmed Madobe was elected "president" of Somalia's volatile southern Jubaland region following weeks of tense negotiations between rival factions, officials said on May 15, 2013. Madobe was elected by a 500-strong conference of clan elders and local leaders who voted for a leader, a move opposed by the central government in the capital Mogadishu.
