JAPAN-POLITICS-RESTORATION PARTY
Osaka Mayor and co-leader of the Japan Restoration Party Toru Hashimoto (L) makes a speech as party co-leader Shintaro Ishihara (R) looks on in Tokyo on June 6, 2013, ahead of elections for members of the Metropolitan Assembly in June and the upper house of national Diet in July. Hashimoto recently caused a storm with comments on wartime "comfort women" by suggesting that battle-stressed soldiers during World War II needed the services of up to 200,000 sex slaves from Korea, China, the Philippines and elsewhere who were forcibly drafted into Japanese brothels. Ishihara, a former Tokyo governor and also is known for his nationalistic views, came to Hashimoto's defence after the remarks, arguing prostitutes and militaries have co-existed throughout history.
