US-POLITICS-CONGRESS-DINGELL-FILES
(FILES) Chairman Emeritus US Representative John Dingell, Democrat of Michigan, listens as he attends a session of the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee Forum in this September 15, 2009, file photo in Washington, DC. Dingell on Friday became the longest-serving member of Congress in US history, capping a monumental career on Capitol Hill that began six years before US President Barack Obama was born. The 86-year-old from Michigan entered the record books when he began his 20,997th day in the House of Representatives, eclipsing the previous milestone held by the late Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia. The hard-nosed legislator, who once made Republican adversaries or witnesses at his hearings quiver in their wingtips, has been on the job since December 13, 1955, claiming the seat that his father held for 22 years until his death.
