The Paris-bound Boeing-747, with 229 aboard, exploded and crashed shortly after takeoff from New York John F. Kennedy airport on July 17,1996. There is a renewed effort to reopen the investigation that downed TWA Flight 800 off the coast of New York in 1996. Former investigators on June 19, 2013 called on the National Transportation Safety Board to re-examine the cause, saying new evidence points to the often-discounted theory that a missile strike may have downed the jumbo jet.
