TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY ISABEL MALSANG -- RESTRICTED TO EDITORIAL USE, MANDATORY MENTION OF THE ARTIST UPON PUBLICATION, TO ILLUSTRATE THE EVENT AS SPECIFIED IN THE CAPTION --

Visitors admire artwork by Russian artist Marc Chagall at an exhibition of pieces from the Teriade collection at the Museum of Byzantine Art in Athens on June 19, 2013. Pierre Reverdy's "Song of the Dead" illustrated by Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse's "Jazz" are only some of the restored treasures of art editor Teriade, that are currently on display in Athens. The so-called "Great Books" are housed in the museum that Teriade founded in his native island of Lesvos, in eastern Greece, a building plagued by chronic and severe problems of humidity and high temperatures. Damaged by humidity and bright sunshine, the works were rescued by experts from Athens' Museum of Byzantine Art, who restored them with the help of European funds, urgently granted to the indebted, crisis-hit country.
