TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY Thomas CABRAL
A combination of pictures taken on June 21, 2013 shows Lee Sterling posing at the Necessidades Palace in Lisbon and a document attesting the payment of a visa signed by Aristides Sousa Mendes, then consul General of Portugal in Bordeaux. Lee is one of the four known survivors from the debacle of 1940 "saved" by Aristides de Sousa Mendes. He arrived in Portugal with his parents and his sister when he was 4 years old. Thirty descendants of survivors from the debacle of 1940, who were able to leave France thanks to the visas issued by Aristides de Sousa Mendes, then consul General of Portugal in Bordeaux, France, were allowed to consult the register where were recorded the visas issued by the Portuguese consul, against the instructions of Antonio Salazar dictatorship.
