ANTARCTICA-AUSTRALIA-JAPAN-WHALING-FILES

TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY by Jan HENNOP

(FILES) A handout photo taken on February 25, 2013 and received on February 26 shows the Sea Shepherd ship Bob Barker (R) colliding with the Japanese whaling fleet fuel tanker the San Laurel, as Japanese whalers and militant conservationists clashed dangerously in icy waters off Antarctica, with both sides accusing the other of ramming their vessels. Veteran anti-whaling campaigner Paul Watson said the Japanese factory ship the Nisshin Maru rammed the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's much smaller vessel the Bob Barker. But on its website, Japan's Institute for Cetacean Research accused several Sea Shepherd boats of ramming the Nisshin Maru as it attempted to refuel with her supply tanker the Sun Laurel. Australia will take its fight to stop Japan hunting whales in the Antarctic to the UN's top court on June 26, 2013, in what activists say is a make or break case for the giant marine mammals' future.
