SWITZERLAND-RELIGION-CATHOLICS-VATICAN-FUNDAMENTALISM
A new priest gives blessing after an ordination mass of the breakaway fundamentalist Roman Catholic Society of St Pius X in Econe, western Switzerland on June 28, 2013. This year, nine fundamentalist priests have been inducted by the Society. Some 2,000 worshippers attended the ceremony held under a giant tent outside the chapel in Econe, which was celebrated mainly in Latin. Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, the founder of the Society of St Pius X, had consecrated the bishops of his order in 1988. He had broken away from the Church in 1970 in protest at reforms passed by the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s. AFP PHOTO / FABRICE COFFRINI
