The commemoration event was organized by the Hungarian communist party, the 'Munkaspart' (Workers' party). Kadar was General Secretary of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party, presiding over the country from the counterinsurgency of the Hungarian Uprising of 1956 until his retirement in 1988.
