FRANCE-ALGERIA-TORTURE-ALLEG-FILES
(FILES) -- A file picture taken in 1962 shows French writer and eminent member of Communist Party Henri Alleg writing in Moscow. Alleg died at the age of 91 on July 18, 2013 in Paris. French communist settler in Algeria, he wrote "La Question" (the Question) and was arrested by French paratroopers in June 1957 for editing the "Alger Republican", a left wing daily newspaper, banned by the French colonial government. The torture practiced by French military during the Algerian war was best described by Henri Alleg himself. While detained incommunicado for a month, Alleg was tortured repeatedly. After his imprisonment he returned to France and wrote the book which was banned and all stocks seized two weeks its publication. AFP PHOTO
