TURKEY-POLITICS-TOURISM-TOWN-PLANNING
TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY NICOLAS CHEVIRON
People arrive on Yassiada island on July 21, 2013. On the same day, people protested against a government plan to zone the Yassiada and Sivriada islands, which hold both archaeological and political importance for Turkey, for tourism and housing, amid calls to turn the islands into a “Democracy Museum.” Yassiada is the symbol of the sorrows of Turkish democracy. It is the island where Menderes, his foreign minister, Fatin Rustu Zorlu, and finance minister, Hasan Polatkan, were executed on September 17, 196, on Imrali Island, but it was Yassiada that lived on in Turkish memory as the symbol of mourning.
