INDIA-FOOD-INFLATION-PROTEST
Women's Welfare Organisation activists hold up an effigy of Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh, seen garlanded with vegetables including onions, during a demonstration in Amritsar on August 22, 2013. The activists demonstrated against the high prices of basic commodities and the Congress party-led national government in New Delhi. Onion prices are back on the front-pages in India after a spike in prices caused by supply shortages, with a kilogram costing 60 rupees (less than a dollar) in the capital from as little as 15 rupees last year. The humble root vegetable, an essential ingredient in Indian cooking, has a surprisingly weighty track record of political influence. AFP PHOTO/NARINDER NANU
