FILES - Picture taken in February 1973 in Santiago of Chilean president Salvador Allende during an electoral meeting. Born in Valparaiso in 1908 he took part to the foundation of Chilean socialist party in 1933 and was elected deputy for the first time in 1939. Elected to the presidency in 1970 as leader of the left-wing Unidad Popular coalition, he died 11 September 1973 when his government was overthrown by the armed forces. AFP PHOTO
