SENEGAL-FRANCE-ENVIRONMENT-DIPLOMACY

TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY Malick Rokhy BA

Senegalese ecologist and Minister for the Environment and Protection of nature, Haidar El Ali, speaks with French development minister Pascal Canfin (R) in Tobor, a village near Ziguinchor, the main city of the Casamance region on September 13, 2013. Crabs scuttle among mangrove roots in a dense riverbank forest in southern Senegal, where a radical reforestation project is reviving wildlife and boosting the west African nation's lukewarm economy. Described by the French government as "a model for Senegal, Africa and the world", the programme has seen an area larger than the city of Paris replanted with tropical coastal vegetation over the last seven years.
