SWITZERLAND-VOTE-ISLAM-VEIL-DEMO
Islamic Central Council of Switzerland (ICCS - CCIS) member Nora Illi (R), one of the few Swiss women wearing the niqab, checks her mobile phone on September 18, 2013 prior to a press conference in Lugano against an upcoming cantonal vote on banning face-covering headgear in public places. Ticino will become on September 22 the first Swiss canton to hold a so-called "anti-burqa" referendum. Although the initiative does not explicitly target Muslims--the phrasing to be voted on is "nobody in public streets or squares may veil or hide their face"--it is directed against the burqas and niqabs. Political commentators say the initiative has good chances of being accepted. Main slogan on the poster reads "Please don't lock me up". AFP PHOTO / FABRICE COFFRINI
