TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY MARIETTE LE ROUX

A handout photo provided on September 23, 2013 by the University of Cambridge shows a cuckoo finch chick sitting on January 29, 2008 in a host nest at an undisclosed location. Infamous for bamboozling other birds into hatching and raising its young, new research has uncovered just how low the African cuckoo finch will stoop to evade its maternal duties. The yellow, streaked cuckoo, slightly smaller than a Lovebird, has long been known to lay its eggs in the nests of other birds, and even to try and match its egg colouring to those of its hosts. The bird has discovered that laying several eggs in the same nest confuses the hosts, rendering them confused and less likely to spot and eject the intruder eggs, according to the authors of a study published in the journal Nature Communications.
