US-POLITICS-ECONOMY-BUDGET-RELIGION-FILES

(FILES) File photo dated January 20, 2009 shows the invocation at the luncheon given by Dr. Barry C. Black (R background) as US President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (R), pray in Statutory Hall at the US Capitol in Washington, DC. Many lawmakers seek divine guidance in the midst of legislative crises, but during the ongoing US government closure of October 2013 the Senate's chaplain, Barry Black, is offering a blunt message: work it out, people. "We acknowledge our transgressions, our shortcomings, our smugness, our selfishness and our pride," the chaplain said in his floor prayer on Capitol Hill October 7, 2013 in Washington, DC. "Deliver us from the hypocrisy of attempting to sound reasonable while being unreasonable." With Republicans and Democrats locked in stalemate, Black implored: "Forgive us also when we put politics ahead of progress." Like hundreds of thousands of federal employees, the chaplain is not getting paid during the shutdown, and his Bible study classes for senators and staff have been put on hold.
