US President Barack Obama walks to the Oval Office of the White House after visiting Martha's Table in Washington, DC, October 14, 2013, as the crisis over a US government shutdown and debt ceiling standoff continues into the third week of the shutdown. Obama was to meet Republican and Democratic congressional leaders Monday at the White House, stepping up efforts to reach a deal to head off a historic debt default. Obama will hold the meeting at 1900 GMT and make clear "the need for Congress to act to pay our bills," a White House official said on condition of anonymity. With just three days before the US Treasury exhausts its borrowing authority, and the government entering its third week of a crippling shutdown, lawmakers have scrambled to work out a deal that would resolve both crises.
