German President Joachim Gauck (R) gestures to German Chancellor Angela Merkel after he handed over her certificates of discharge at the Bellevue presidential palace on October 22, 2013 in Berlin following the first sitting of the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, held first sitting after the September general elections. The SPD will enter into what will likely be a lengthy process of negotiating terms for a new coalition with Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) starting the following day.
